THE HISTORY

Le Morne

Steeped in history, it served as a refuge for escaped slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries, forming a maroon community. Fearing capture, the community chose the mountain's rugged cliffs as their sanctuary. Tragically, the slaves leapt to their deaths when authorities attempted to capture them, choosing freedom over enslavement.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Le Morne is a poignant reminder of the island's complex past and the resilience of those who sought freedom against the harsh backdrop of oppression.
